Dino Melaye goofs, calls Saraki ‘Mr. Speaker’

The Chairman of Senate Ad hoc Committee on Information, Senator Dino Melaye (Kogi West) yesterday committed a faux pas on the floor of the Upper Chamber when he referred to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki as Mr. Speaker.

This blunder by Melaye, who used to be a member of the House of Representatives, shocked his co-senators, with some of them bursting into laughter that rented the air for close to three minutes.

The staunch supporter of the Senate President made the goof when he stood to raise a point of order 41(b) over the alleged illegal disengagement of workers of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS.

He started his point of order by addressing Saraki as “Mr. Speaker, Sir”, when he should have said: “The Senate President, Sir”.

By the time the laughter died down, the Kogi-born Senator continued by seeking to tender a petition written by the disengaged workers. The petition is seeking the Senate to compel the FIRS to re-engage the disengaged staff.

The Senate President granted his plea allowing him to tender the petition before his colleagues.
