Acting Director-General of the National Boundary Commission, Surveyor Adaji Adamu has stated that the poor funding of the commission was responsible for the lingering boundary crisis in Nigeria.
He made this known during the 2019 budget defence of the Commission in Abuja.
Adamu explained that the commission was saddled with the responsibility of tackling boundary crisis and ensuring swift intervention, but lacked the financial muscle to do so.
He revealed to the National Assembly panel headed by Senator Abdullahi Gumel representing Jigawa North-East Senatorial District that the “National Boundary Commission has six zonal offices across the country without a single operational vehicles in the zones.”
“There lingering Boundary crisis, but we find it difficult to intervene in some due to lack of funds.”
The Acting DG added that Nigerian citizens have been taken for granted in some communities with international boundaries as a result of the commission’s inability to intervene.
Chairman of the committee, Senator Abdullahi Gumel lashed at the government over the inadequate funding of the Commission.
He stressed that there would be no end to boundary crisis without the government releasing adequate funding for the commission, while urging the President Muhammadu Buhari government to always make 100% budgetary allocation to the Commission.
