Democracy Day: Buhari asked to declare MKO Abiola ex-President

The Chairman, Committee for Democracy and Rights of the People, CDRP, Comrade Amitolu Shittu, has called on the Federal Government to declare the acclaimed winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola ex-president after 21 years of his demise.

Shittu said the only way through which Abiola’s name could be immortalized was for the federal government to declare him as ex-president.

He asserted that there was a consensus among Nigerians that the late business mogul laid down his life for the emancipation and liberation for Nigerians, saying Abiola would remain the hero and icon of true democracy.

Shittu made the statement at an event organised by civil society organisations, in collaboration with Osun State Government in Osogbo, the Osun State capital with the theme: “The State of Insecurity in Nigeria and Challenges of National Questions (The Way Forward).”

The Head of Service in the state, Mr. Olowogboyega Oyebade in his address said the spate of insecurity in Nigeria must be tackled through scientific means, and with concerted efforts amongst critical stakeholders.

Oyebade canvassed for conscious moves towards entrenching democracy in the political space, as he listed factors militating against democratic ethos to include : Lack of party supremacy, Poverty and absence of referendum in the Nigerian constitution among others.

Meanwhile, scores of Human Right Activists in the state, under the aegis of Coalition of Civil Society Groups on Wednesday morning thronged the streets of Osogbo, to mark the new democracy Day.

The activists, numbering about 5,000 commended President Muhammadu Buhari for honouring the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993, his running mate, Ambassador Babagana Kingibe.
