Delta government set to takeover abandoned Gbaramatu Cottage hospital

Delta State Government has indicated interest to takeover the abandoned cottage hospital in Okerenkoko, Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South-West Local Government Area.

Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Azinge said this during an inspection tour of the hospital with other top officials on Thursday.

In a chat with newsmen, Azinge expressed satisfaction with the equipment in the hospital, noting that discussions to takeover the cottage hospital will soon commence.

“It is a decently built hospital with a decent operation theater, laboratory, waiting room and 15-capacity bed space.

“We are impressed with what we are seeing. It has its own generating set, so it is a full fledge hospital. We are going to take the message back to the governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa.

“This cottage hospital serves not only the neighboring community but also people from Ondo and Edo states. So we will make a plea to the governor.

“In achieving his SMART agenda and his universal healthcare coverage for all Deltans, we will take over this hospital and make it available to all.”

Chairman, House Committee On Health, Delta State House of Assembly, Hon Tonye Timi described Okenrenkoko Community as a peaceful community and agreed that the cottage hospital was well-built.

Speaking, Secretary, Tompolo Foundation, Comrade Paul Bebenimibo, appealed to Governor Okowa to act fast in order to bring succor to the people of the community.

DAILY POST gathered that the cottage hospital was allegedly destroyed by the Nigerian Military under the guise of searching for militants in the Niger Delta.

Four years after, the Tompolo Foundation, founded by Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo rebuilt and managed the cottage hospital for some time and later called on the State Government to take it over due to paucity of funds.

The cottage hospital was initially built by the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, in 2008 and was handed over to the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, DESOPADEC, to manage.
