Delta community submerges in flood, property worth millions of naira destroyed

Residents of Ozoro Owhelogbo, and Otor-Igho Communities in Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State have been rendered homeless with property worth millions of naira destroyed as flood submerged over one hundred houses due to heavy rainfall over the weekend.

DAILY POST gathered that the few drainages including water channels are being blocked with refuse.

In a chat with DAILY POST, a student of the Delta State Polytechnic in Ozoro, Eniwho Emmanuel whose house was flooded along Urude road stated that the reason for the flood is because of refuse dumps in the drainages as well as poor sanitary conditions of the people of the area.

“This is so surprising to me, I have been hearing of flooding from rainfall but this is the first time I’m experiencing it. The reason why the whole place is being flooded with water is that, the drainages and water channels are being blocked with refuse. Since I packed into this house, they have never packed the drainages. Even when it is environmental day. You won’t see anyone to pack the drainages.”

A seventy-year-old woman, Mrs Emonena Udubra, a retired teacher who is a resident of Igbrude road in Owhelogbo said. “We have lost so many of our goods to this flood. My garri and other foods are wet. I and my children couldn’t sleep all through the night.”

Another victim in the community, Mr. Samuel Efedhua warned that the community might be wiped out by flood if urgent steps are not taken to avert same.

As at the time of filing this report, effort to reach the HOD, Environment in Isoko North Local Government Council, Mr Job Owhefere for comment proved abortive as his phone lines were not reachable. But the media aide to the Isoko North Local Government Chairman, Mr. Moses Omovevah stated that the flooding within the Ozoro metropolis is, “man made,” resulting from dumping of refuse in drainages and blocking of water channels.
