Delta community reacts to alleged attack on herdsmen

The Eku Traditional Council today denied chasing herdsmen from the community in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta, stressing that they have a cordial relationship with the herders.

The Prime Minister of Eku community, Chief Godwin Aganbi made the assertion during a chat with newsmen at his palace today.

Chief Aganbi said,”We are living peacefully with the herdsmen. We don’t have any problem with them. The Hausa/Fulani herdsmen have their Semi-Mosque here.”

This is coming following a report that a Delta State lawmaker and some community leaders chased over twenty thousand cows and herdsmen from Abraka, Igun, Eku and other communities from the area.

A youth in Eku community, Stephen Gbeburu who also spoke with our correspondent corroborated the claims of the traditional ruler saying,”The Fulani herdsmen are still inside the bush in our community. ”

Gbeburu, however, noted that herdsmen have not killed anybody in their land even though they hear of alleged killings of indigenes of Abraka, Jesse, Igun and other communities.

Gbeburu said they’ve succeeded in managing the activities of the Fulani herdsmen who sometimes destroy crops belonging to farmers in the community.

A farmer in the community, Mrs. Mary Iyeke who also spoke with DAILY POST accused the Fulani herdsmen of allegedly destroying their cassava and maize.

Mrs. Iyeke also claimed that the herdsmen were still very much in Eku community but that she had not seen anyone killed by the herders in the area.

Mrs. Iyeke noted that they(indigenes) have been appealing to herdsmen to graze easily without destroying their cassava and maize.
