Angry indigenes of Ugborodo community in Warri South-West Local Government today threatened to attack oil facilities in their area if Delta State Government imposes Austin Oborogbeyi as chairman of Ugborodo Management Committee, DAILY POST reports.
The Ugborodo people handed down the threat in a warning protest in Chevron facility at Escravos area.
The protesters also banned Austin Oborogbeyi and others from entering the community.
The Ugborodo people stated that Chevron Nigeria Limited should be ready to bear the consequences of their actions when fully operational.
While noting that it’s the responsibility of the community to choose its executives in the past fifty years, the Ugborodo community accused Chevron Nigeria Limited of applying “divide” and “rule” tactics in the area.
The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such ” Governor Okowa appoint Austin Oborogbeyi as one of your commissioners”, “Governor Okowa, Ugborodo is not one of your ministries,” “Okowa is the problem between Ugborodo and Chevron,” ” Governor Okowa of Delta State, Jolomi Metseaghanrun is the chairman of Ugborodo Community,” Governor Okowa of Delta State, the people of Ugborodo are peace loving people. Enough is Enough” and “Governor Okowa of Delta State Ugborodo Management Committee under the chairmanship of Jolomi Metseaghanrun has come to stay,” accusing the Delta State Governor, Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa of allegedly fueling the crisis between them and Chevron Nigeria Limited.
The people also accused Chevron of dragging the Ugborodo community saying,”We put in our management committee, Chevron said they will not work with Emma Meke administration not until they get letter from government.”
In a chat with DAILY POST, an Ugborodo community Youth Leader, Temi Kingsway Eyoibo said they embarked on the warning protest when information filtered into the community that the Delta State Government had allegedly imposed Austin Oborogbeyi to work with Chevron as the Chairman of its Management Committee.
“Austin Oborogbeyi entered the community and started calling some of our people and telling them that government ‘don give’am approval, make he come work as the chairman of the community.”
“We no longer want to see any of them in Escravos. If Okowa like, make he give them letter to be executive or what have you. They should better sit in Warri and forget about Escravos.”
Eyoibo noted that prior to the ban, Austin Oborogbeyi and the others had enjoyed the privileges of entering and doing whatever they want in Ugborodo community.
