The Delta State University, Delsu Abraka today disclosed that it discovers twenty-one cases of Syphilis as well as other sexually transmitted infections among male students within the last three weeks, DAILY POST is reporting.
The Director, University Health Services, Dr.(Mrs.) N.C. Nwabuokwu made the disclosure today during the health talks organized by Dr. Sharon Osaide Arigbe-Osula, a Volunteer Consultant Physician.
Dr.(Mrs.) Nwabuokwu who was represented by the Principal Medical Officer of the University, Dr. Ekuerhare Basil lamented the rate at which syphilis has affected young men in the institution.
He said,” They come to the hospital with big rashes in their penis and I keep wondering if syphilis has come back again with force.”
Dr. Nwabuokwu noted that the case is high now because male students whom he described as “sexually active” don’t use protections despite medical advice.
Dr. Nwabuokwu also condemned the use of “tramadol, spanor, monkey tail and Igbooh,” stressing that the development is alarming.
He enjoined female students to insist on their boyfriends if at all they have any to use condoms during sex in order to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.
