Declare State of Emergency in Southern Kaduna Too – Human rights group tells Jonathan

A human rights group, Centre for Development and Rights Advocacy, CEDRA, Thursday appealed to President Goodluck Jonathan to equally declare a state of emergency in southern part of Kaduna State as he has done in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno States.

According to the group, the call for emergency became imperative in view of the ceaseless killing of defenceless villagers in Southern part of Kaduna by Fulani herdsmen.

A statement by the group’s convener, Dr. John Danfulani said, “the declaration of state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States surprised Nigerians; particularly those dwelling in Southern Kaduna area of Kaduna State where series of terrorist attacks have been occurring unabated.”

The group recalled that “since 2011 to date, not less than 500 innocent people, mostly children and women have been killed altogether.”

The statement reads, “Despite this, President Goodluck Jonathan and the nation’s security chiefs did not find it worthy to declare state of emergency in troubled Southern Kaduna region which is under terrorist siege.

“The presidential action left us with surprise and conviction that President Jonathan and Nigeria’s security chiefs, are really not abreast with insecurity ravaging Southern Kaduna, or at best playing politics with security of lives and property of innocent and law abiding people of Southern Kaduna, whose lives are presently at the instance of high powered terrorists carrying out gradual genocide in the area.

“The action further left us with the reality that there is more than meet the eye, as far as the Southern Kaduna ‘s continuous massacre is concerned.
