Deadly Lassa fever reported in Navy hospital in Cross River

Deadly Lassa fever has been reported in Nigeria Navy Clinic in Calabar, Cross River State Capital. Some guests and relatives who went to see their relatives in the Clinic on Sunday were turned back. The Clinic was quarantined.

A man who described himself as Mr Odiong said that they were turned back from the Clinic, “We were turned back when we tried to visit a new born baby and mother.”

When DAILY POST visited the Clinic on Monday, normal activities were ongoing, though people were restricted in some areas.

Sadly, when DAILY POST called the Commissioner for Health, Dr Asibong Inyang, calls went unanswered.

However, the Director General, Primary Health Care Agency, Dr. Betta Edu told DAILY POST on phone on Monday that suspected case of Lassa fever was reported in the Navy Clinic.

“Yes, I am aware, it is not yet a Lassa fever until it is confirmed in the Lab before we can say it is a case of Lassa fever.

However, she added, “We only saw signs and symptoms of hemorrhagic fever. We have sent samples to the Lab in Abuja for further investigations and confirmation.

“When they send it back, we can then authoritatively say it is either Lassa fever or not. But for now, basic precaution has been put in place, the patient has been isolated, the place has been isolated,” She said.

Dr Edu promised to provided further updates on the development.
