Dangote
Four months after winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, business mogul Alhaji Aliko Dangote is yet to redeem the 1 million US dollar he pledged to give the senior national team players as reward for their excellent performance.
Following their conquest at the Africa’s elite football tournament, some business men and states government hosted the Stephen Keshi-led side to some lavish receptions where they promised to reward the players handsomely. but most of the players (mostly home-based) who are preparing for the team’s crowded schedules in June are still asking: ‘where are the money pledged to us by those individuals.’
Apart from Africa’s richest man, Dangote, who some close associates are fingering his tight schedules as the main cause of the delay in doling out the money, there is also Alhaji Ishaku Rabiu, who pledged 500,000 US dollar; same as Senator Ifeanyi Uba.
The Cross River State government that has been behind the team’s successes in recent past is also yet to redeem its pledge but officials in the state say Senator Liyel Imoke’s government will soon fulfill the promise as usual.
One of the home-based players was of the view that a timely redemption of those pledges will go a long way in encouraging the players and officials to do well in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers and the Confederations Cup scheduled to host next month in Brazil.
Already, the team have secured entry visas to the South American country, having earlier secured the ones to America for the friendly game against Mexico and Germany where the team will camp for the qualifiers against Kenya’s Harambee Stars and the Brave Warriors of Namibia.
