Three members of a cross-border robbery syndicate have been arrested by officials of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, the Nigeria Police Force, NPF and their counterparts in the neighbouring Benin Republic.
The bandits who are alleged to be notorious robbers and known for their escape through waterways after operations, were said to have battled both country (Nigeria and Benin Republic) security forces before their arrest on Wednesday.
Other members reportedly escaped with bullet wounds while three were apprehended.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, on Thursday, addressed journalists at the Lagos/Seme border disclosing that it had been a week of intensive intelligence work, which eventually paid off on Wednesday night with a bloody encounter that forced the gang to flee.
Owoseni said, “It was the collaboration between the two countries and agencies that made the arrest of three suspects possible.
“In their attempt to abscond, they abandoned their armoured boat, dynamite and close to 3,000 units of ammunition.”
The CP, however, urged Lagosians and Benin Republic nationals living along the water areas to report to the police if they see floating bodies on the water.
