Umuahia- The Zone ‘C’ Federal Operations unit of the Nigeria Customs Service has destroyed 607 cartons of banned frozen poultry products.
The zone, with its headquarters in Owerri destroyed the seized banned frozen poultry products yesterday at the Abia/Imo Command premises.
Supervising the exercise, the Area Comptroller in charge of the zone, Mr. Victor David Dimka insisted that frozen poultry products remain prohibited items and should not be imported into the country.
Represented by Mr. Anthony Mba, Dimka put the value of the goods at N6, 191, 400. He disclosed that it was imported from Brazil and intercepted along Owerri/Aba road by officers of the Zone last Sunday.
Dimka explained that poultry products were banned by the import prohibition list under Customs and Excise Management Act,CEMA, section 46 of 45 FLN CAP 200. He said that they must be impounded because of their unhygienic preservative methods.
He warned the public against the consumption of the products as they are injurious to both the human health and the economy of the nation.
He also warned smugglers who engage in the importation of these products to stop such act due to its negative impact on the growth of the nation’s economy.
The destruction exercise was witnessed by officials of NAFDAC, SSS and NESREA.
