Customs boss vows to demote officers not meriting their promotion

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Col. Hammed Ali (retd), yesterday observed that some of the promotions done in the past were irregular and pledged to review all cases of irregular promotions among officers.

Giving this hint while addressing officers of the Service at their Bompai headquarters in Kano, Ali decried how some officers were promoted above their seniors and others were promoted when they should not have been promoted.

He noted that the most worrisome aspect is that officers who got double-promotions could not be linked to any justifiable gallantry or accomplishment for the Service; “rather they were uplifted because they had powerful relatives at the point of power.”

He declared that under his charge, those who actually did not merit their promotions would be demoted, adding that henceforth, promotion in the service must be based on merit, as only those who work for it would get promoted.

The Comptroller-General maintained that the NCS was yet to meet Federal Government’s 2015 revenue target of N944 billion, adding that at present, they were able to generate just N744 billion. He charged the officers to redouble their revenue generation efforts with a view to surpassing the yearly target.
