A rival cult clash in Ebonyi state at the weekend reportedly left one person killed and scores critically wounded.
The clash was between two cult groups, Black Axe and Aiye confraternities.
The deceased, Christopher Egwu, was stabbed to death by one Chukwuemeka Oko at Omakaejali drinking joint in Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state after a heated argument.
Trouble ensued when Oko confronted Egwu at the drinking joint and ordered him to leave the joint or have himself to blame for allegedly challenging his group; but Egwu was said to have refused to leave and warned Oko to be mindful of his word.
An eyewitness, Okoche Eze, told New Telegraph that Oko in anger broke a bottle of beer he was drinking and stabbed Egwu in the stomach, adding that the victim was rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, FETHA, where he was confirmed dead.
The witness further noted that the deceased’s cult group went on a reprisal attack and injured three members of the suspect’s group.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP George Okafor, when contacted, confirmed the incident, saying efforts were on to arrest all the suspects.
“Oko, who hails from Amamgballa community, has been arrested,” the PPRO said, as he warned youths to desist from cult activities as anyone found in such act would be dealt with.
He, however, reiterated the readiness of the police to curb cultism in the state.
