About six men on Thursday reportedly sustained various degrees of injuries in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State after rival cult groups, Eiye and Ake confraternities allegedly engaged in a deadly fight over their girlfriends.
While six of the cult members were wounded, seven of them were arrested and detained by the police in the state.
One of the cult members identified as Raraye, allegedly hit the girlfriend of a rival group member, identified as Okeh Patrick, after he (Patrick) allegedly made love advances to Raraye’s girlfriend, an action that was planned to be a form of retaliation, the Punch gathered.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP, Alkali Baba Usman, who confirmed the incident to journalists, said seven of the cultists were arrested and are helping the police in investigation.
He confirmed that one of the injured suspects had his genital organ slashed, adding that the incident paralysed activities in Sapele and environs as residents scampered for safety amid flying broken bottles and sporadic shootings.
He said, “Investigations have revealed that Sapele and environs have recently been a ground for cultism and related acts for the past three years with about 26 persons killed in cold blood and flash points of cultism and its related activities have emerged to be Ogwashi-Uku, Ebus, and some part of Asaba and Okpanam community,” the police boss noted.
The CP added that efforts had been put in place to bring the cult perpetrators in the areas to book, while ensuring that the police would do everything possible to arrest the fleeing cultists.
Usman disclosed that the police recovered six battle axes, machetes, and six cut-to-size guns at the scene of the incident, adding that the suspects would be charged to court on completion of investigation.
