Cultist nabbed for killing man to avenge brother’s death

A 21-year-old self-confessed cultist, one Morufu Liadi, who admitted to killing a 29-year-old motorcyclist, Lateef Sura, was Tuesday, paraded by the Lagos State Police Command for alleged murder.

According to the accused, he wanted to avenge his brother’s murder but killed the wrong person after his friend deceived him. He had allegedly killed the victim during a birthday party in the Alakara, Mushin area of the state, Punch reports.

Liadi, who hails from Abeokuta, Ogun State, confessed to stabbing the deceased several times on the neck and on his waist till he died because he wanted to avenge the death of his brother who was killed in 2008.

It will be recalled that on Tuesday, October 20, there was confusion at the birthday party which held on Agbekolade Street in Mushin, after two of the guests stabbed one Lateef Sura to death.

Sura, who had just returned from work, had reportedly gone to the party at about 8pm when the guests brought out weapons and attacked him. He reportedly lay in the pool of his own blood until policemen from the Alakara division came to evacuate his corpse from the scene.

Reports revealed that the police afterwards, arrested the two suspects who also confessed to the murder. The case was reportedly transferred to the state Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, for further investigation.

According to Liadi, he joined the ‘Eiye’ Cult last year and he had been actively involved in the cult’s gang fights in the area.

He said, “On that day, my colleagues came to see me at home and said we were going for a birthday party at Agbekolade Street, Mushin. I stay in the Oju Irin (railway) area. The ‘Aiye’ and the ‘Eiye’ cult gangs had a dispute in the area.

“It was my friend, Rilwan (Balogun), and others at the party who pointed the man to me that he was the killer of my elder brother. I had not met the deceased before.

“My elder brother, Azeez, also known as Arsenal, died in April 2008. He was killed by cult boys. So, I jumped on the man and began to stab him.”

Liadi said he stabbed the deceased several times on the neck and on the back using a table knife. He claimed he did not know he was deceived.

Further into his confession, he said, “I belong to the ‘Eiye’ Cult. I joined the gang some time last year. I am not a student. I was working as a vulcaniser.”

23-year-old Rilwan Balogun, from Kwara State, who reportedly pointed the deceased to Liadi, said he mistook the man for a cult member in Idi Oro.

He said, “It is true that I was the one who pointed out the deceased to Liadi. We had been invited to the birthday party by friends. I told Liadi that the deceased was an Idi Oro hoodlum. And then they jumped on him and began to stab him.

“I dropped out of school in JSS 3. I subsequently learnt carpentry but I was jobless as of the time the police arrested me. When the deceased fell down, the party scattered and all of us ran home. But I was arrested by the police inside my house.”

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, while parading the suspects, saying they would be charged to court.

“These are the two who killed an innocent person in Alakara, Mushin area.

“There are Eiye tattoos on their bodies. They will both be charged to court to face the wrath of the law,” Owoseni said.
