Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibadan zone has called on the National Assembly to intervene and prevent the education sector from being plunged into another round of crisis.
This is due to what it called “unfortunate trend of decreasing salary of public universities’ staff”.
The union threatened that academic staff at LAUTECH may be forced to resume their suspended strike action against the backdrop of events in LAUTECH.
They accused Oyo and Osun states of demonstrating lack of commitment to the funding requirements of the institution.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Ibadan Zonal Chairman of ASUU, comprising of University of Ibadan, LAUTECH, Unilorin, KWASU and UNIOSUN, Dr Ade Adejumo.
Adejumo said that the union will not mind to resume its suspended action even in the midst of the ongoing examination.
He noted that the ugly trend which started since December, 2015 had occasioned payment of truncated salaries to ASUU members who have rendered hundred percentage of duties in the universities.
While citing the example of the University of Ibadan, Dr Adejumo stated that the premier university had in the last two months received drastically reduced salaries as a result of inexplicable trend of incomplete subvention from the Federal government.
The Ibadan zone therefore called on the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to urgently intervene before the nation is thrown into another round of unnecessary crisis in the education sector.
He added that the state governments within the Ibadan zone must also live up to their funding responsibilities to their universities.
“On the recent revelations of monumental fraud and mind bugging manipulations going on at the university of Ilorin which vindicates our petitions to the anti-graft agencies, the Federal Government is hereby called upon to show more than a passing interest in probing the activities of the past and present administrations of the university.
“This is very important given the present government’s avowed zero tolerance for corruption. Unilorin matter provides a litmus test for this government to prove that it is serious with its fight against graft. The world is waiting and watching”, he added.
