The Imo State Chairman of the pan-Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr Ezechinyere Chukwu, has urged the Federal Government to create another state in the South-East geopolitical zone.

Speaking in Owerri, the state capital, after inaugurating the Ehime Mbano chapter of the group, Chukwu urged the Federal Government to “begin the process of creating additional state in the South-East geopolitical zone and bring the zone at par with others in the country.”

According to Chukwu, the creation of an additional state will reduce the agitations among the people of the South-East over alleged marginalisation.

He said, “The creation of an additional state in the South East zone will assuage frayed nerves and reduce agitation against marginalization”.

Chukwu described as unfair the non-creation of a sixth state in the zone, despite a recommendation for additional states creation during the 2014 National Conference.

“The non-creation of another state from the South East is inequitable, unfair and crass display of double standards, as what is good to the goose is also good for the gander,” he said.

Chukwu’s appeal is coming at a time various separatist groups from the region are calling for the break-up of the country over alleged marginalisation.

Leader of the Biafra Independence Movement, BIM, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, had while claiming that people of the region were marginalised, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to grant independence to Biafra.
