Former Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State, Gesila Khan has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in Port Harcourt.
Khan was detained in the EFCC cell against the wish of the prosecution counsel, Oyelakin Oyediran, who argued that having been formally arraigned before the court, she should be taken to the Port Harcourt Maximum Prisons.
Khan is being tried by the EFCC for allegedly obtaining a gratification to the tune of over one hundred and eighty million naira from yet to be named persons, while serving as the state REC, during the 2015 general elections.
Presiding Judge, Justice Sailu Saidu of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, adjourned till Friday, June 9, for hearing on the bail application of Khan.
Justice Saidu said her application was not yet ripe for hearing and therefore has to wait till the next adjourned date.
Khan was represented at the court by S. Larry, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
Also arraigned with the former REC was one Peter Popnin, an ex-staff of the INEC, who allegedly assisted her in receiving the said gratification.
Khan was arrested by the anti-graft agency in 2015, and was detained for several months.
