Umaru Tanko Al-Makura
Efforts by the embattled governor of Nasarawa State, Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura to stop fresh moves by members of the state House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against him suffered a major setback on Friday, as the court rejected his plea.
The court held that the provisions of Section 188 of the constitution are clear, explaining that the governor cannot be tried on charges previously used by the Assembly to impeach him, although the presiding judge said the governor failed to establish any proof that the House was after him with the old charges.
The court threw out the major declaratory reliefs sought by the governor’s lawyer, Chief Wale Olanipekun (SAN) to stop the Assembly from embarking on a fresh impeachment move.
It also threw out all six injunctive reliefs sought by Olanipekun, mainly seeking to restrain the Assembly from further initiating or embarking on any proceedings aimed at removing the governor and from taking any further steps and actions geared towards persecuting him.
