Court sentences two persons to one-year imprisonment each for N125,000 fraud

An Ikeja High Court on Thursday sentenced two men to one year imprisonment each for swindling a businessman of N125,000.

Justice Kudirat Jose handed the sentences to Sunday Ntephe, 46, and Kola Olomosu, 23, after they pleaded guilty to the offences following their arraignment.

The convicts had entered a plea bargain agreement with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The judge convicted them on the two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences.

Jose sentenced them to one year imprisonment on each of the counts, saying the sentences will run concurrently from April 1 when they were arrested and detained for the offences.

“The first defendant (Ntephe) is to pay N80,000 to the victim, Mr Oluwafemi Adetiba, as restitution.

“Also, the second defendant (Olomosu) is to pay N40,000 to the victim as restitution,’’ the judge ordered.

EFCC counsel, Kayode Oni, said the convicts committed the offences between October and November 2013 in Lagos.

Oni said the convicts obtained the money from Adetiba under a pretext that they were capable of producing foreign currencies by washing and dipping plain papers in a chemical substance.

He said that their offences contravened Section 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

According to Oni, the offences breached Section 2 (a) and (c) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act of 2006. (NAN)
