Three men have been sentenced to death for stripping and sexually assaulting a woman they believed dressed too provocatively.
The men are Edward Gitau, Nicholas Mwangi and Meshak Mwangi,
According to DAILY MAIL, the verdict given on Wednesday by Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi in Kenya capped a case that prompted hundreds to march through the capital Nairobi in short, fitted clothing in 2014; calling for an end to violence against women after a video of the attack was made public.
The assault which took place at a petrol station on Nairobi’s outskirts, had the victim stripped, sexually assaulted and robbed of her phone and cash by a violent mob.
The incident was captured on camera and widely circulated on social media.
It was also part of a series of rash assaults against women which led activists to mobilise under the hash tag#MyDressMyChoice and launch a nationwide demonstration in Kenya.
“We are equal, but it is equally important to respect the dignity of a woman. This is what many uncultured men do out there,” said Chief magistrate as he handed out the sentences.
The three men were technically given the death sentence. However Kenya’s ban on carrying out executions means the trio will spend the rest of their lives in jail.
