A High Court in Benin on Tuesday ordered that a 32-year-old travel agent, Raymond Uzokin, who allegedly trafficked 21 victims, comprising males and females, be remanded in prison.
Justice Urhomwen Erameh gave the order after Uzokin pleaded not guilty to nine-counts of trafficking filed by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Benin zonal command.
Justice Erameh adjourned the case until Aug. 1.
NAPTIP alleged that the offence contravened provisions of sections 13(2), 13(4) and 26 of Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.
NAN reports that the agency alleged that the amounts collected from the people ranged from N150,000 to N800,000, with a promise to take them to France to watch the just-concluded FIFA Women’s World Cup.
