Court remands man in prison for slapping 2 policemen

A 36-year-old man, Adegoke Adekanmi, was on Wednesday remanded in prison by an Osun Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ile-Ife for alleged obstruction and assault.

He was arraigned on a five-count charge of attempting to commit felony, obstruction, assault, slapping and kidnapping of two police officers.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Sunday Osanyintuyi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 14 at about 8:35 am at OAUTHC area of Ile-Ife.

Osanyintuyi said the accused assaulted two officers, Omopo Idowu and Oderinde Zacheus, by slapping them while performing their lawful duties.

He further said that the accused attempted to kidnap the duo.

The prosecutor also said the accused obstructed one police officer, Tajudeen Agbaje, attached to “A” Division in Ile-Ife by forcing him into his car while performing his lawful duty.

The offences, he said, contravened Sections 356 (2) and 509 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Osun, 2003.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The defence counsel, Samuel Judge, who applied for the bail of his client, pledged to produce reliable sureties.

Magistrate Olalekan Ijiyode, however, rejected the oral bail application and asked defence counsel to produce a written application.

Ijiyode ordered the remand of the accused at Ile-Ife prison pending the consideration of his bail application.

The magistrate adjourned the case till December 22 for hearing of the bail application.
