Court hears Rivers youth’s case of rights abuse against Nigerian army

The fundamental human rights suit instituted by Augustine Bright of Oshie in Akinima Community, Ahaoda-West Local government area of Rivers state against the Nigerian Army is now before a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt.

Counsels in the matter updated the court on the processes filed and responses from the defendants.

The presiding judge, Justice A. Obile, after listening to the counsels adjourned the matter to the sixth of February 2019 for adoption.

Speaking with newsmen outside the courtroom, Counsel Prince Dugbor, who is representing the assaulted man, said they are in court to enforce the fundamental human rights of Augustine Bright, who was almost allegedly killed by the Army.

“The rights of the applicant has been breached and we as Law abiding citizens think he needs to be compensated. We believe the Nigerian army is a responsible institution and they should be brought before the court,” he said.

On her part, Edith Anyanor, who is the counsel to Agip, wondered why the company is mentioned in the suit.

Bright accused soldiers of the Nigerian Army 16 Brigade in Elele of assault that almost claimed his life.

Bright Augustine said he was shot twice by soldiers of the brigade, Elele attached to the Agip facility at Oshie simply because of an altercation he had with a spy police officer in the community.
