Court grants bail to former Rivers REC, Khan

Former Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State, Ghesila Khan, has been granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt.

She was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commissioner on accusation of bribery to the sum of N180m to influence the results of the 2015 general election.

In his ruling, Justice Saliu Saidu granted her bail in the sum on N100m with two sureties in like sum.

Justice Saidu further ordered that one of the sureties must be a traditional ruler, while the other one must be a director in the Federal or Rivers state civil service.

The trail Judge also ordered Ghesila Khan to submit her international passport to the Court Registrar.

The ruling is against the submission of counsel to the EFCC, who had asked the court to refuse bail to Gesila Khan.

Speaking with newsmen outside the courtroom, Selekowei Larry, who is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and lawyer to Ghesila Khan, welcomed the bail for his client.

“She is a woman of repute who should be treated with utmost respect,” he said.

The former Rivers State Resident Electoral Commissioner was arraigned alongside her alleged accomplice, Peter Popnin.

The matter was adjourned until 5th of July for hearing.
