Justice Uche Agomuo of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has granted bail to twenty pro-Biafran protesters.
The pro-Biafran agitators had been in detention since October last year after they were arrested and charged for disturbing public peace.
Justice Agommuo granted the accused persons a consolidated bail, adding that each of the accused persons must present two sureties.
The Judge stated that one of the sureties must be a blood relative of the accused and must deposit Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500, 000.00) cash, while the other must be a civil servant of level 13 with evidence of recent three months paid salaries and must deposit his/ her original letter of employment.
The trial Judge, who further ordered accelerating hearing of the matter, adjourned to February 16, 17, 18, 2016.
Justice Uche Agommuo also warned both the prosecuting and defendant counsels against default.
Speaking with newsmen, counsel to the 1st, 8th, 14th and 16th accused persons, Davies Livingstone, expressed joy on how the matter is being handled.
He said Justice Agomuo “has showed diligence in the matter as always in all the matters brought before her court.”
“Today, she granted bail which is a huge step for us and to make sure that this matter is dealt with once and for all.
“She also ordered for accelerated hearing from 16, 17 and 18 of February”.
He disclosed that all the defendants’ counsels have unanimously agreed to cancel all their matters or engagements that might clash with adjourned dates, believing that justice will not be delayed.
