Court dissolves 22-year marriage for threat to life

An Akure Customary Court on Friday dissolved a 22-year-old marriage between a cleric, Oluwasesan Olasehinde, and his wife, Seri, over alleged threat to life.

The President of the court, Mrs Victoria Oriowo, said the court had observed that the marriage had broken down irredeemably.

Oriowo said the petitioner’s insistence on the dissolution could not be reversed, adding that the court had no option than to dissolve the union.

She awarded custody of the two children to the respondent, adding that the petitioner should pay N5,000 monthly allowances for the children’s upkeep.

She ordered that the money should be paid to the court’s registry.

The court held that the children’s education should be financed by both parties, said that the petitioner should have free access to the children.

She advised both parties to maintain law and order and that they had a right to appeal the verdict.

Oluwasesan, 60, had asked the court to dissolve his marriage for alleged threat to his life and inability of the respondent to take care of the family.

He said that there was no more love in the marriage.

But, Seri, who denied the allegations, accused the petitioner of being promiscuous and irresponsible.

Seri, a mother of two, said her husband abandoned his home for another woman’s place of abode.
