An Ikole Customary Court in Ekiti State, on Wednesday dissolved the 18-year-old marriage between one Omolara and her husband, Idowu Ogunleye, over the husband’s drinking habit and fetish practices.
Omolara had asked the court to dissolve the union on the grounds that her husband, had planted a fetish substance called “Magun“ in order to charm her.
She said her husband was also a drunk who had failed in discharging his parental responsibility to their five children.
In her testimony before the court, the complainant said that Idowu had accused her of flirting around, which she had denied on several occasions.
“In an attempt to kill me, he put “Magun“ at the entrance of his room and called me to enter the room, but I detected the charm and raised alarm.
“He confessed that he wanted to use the charm to confirm my denial of the adultery allegation and begged me not to tell my family members,“ Omolara said.
She also told the court that her husband spends his savings on alcohol and was in the habit of beating her when drunk.
She, therefore, prayed the court to dissolve the marriage and order Idowu to pay N50, 000 monthly for the upkeep of their children.
In his defence, Idowu denied using fetish means to charm his wife, describing her claim as baseless, and insisted that the woman was engaged in extra marital affairs.
Idowu, however, admitted being a drunk but said that he developed the habit to forget his various challenges.
The defendant agreed to the request for the dissolution of the marriage, but objected to paying N50, 000 monthly for the upkeep of the children.
He urged the court to grant him custody of the five children.
The President of the court, Mrs Yemisi Ojo, dissolved the marriage, saying that the plaintiff had “satisfactorily proved her case against the defendant.”
The court ordered that the custody of the children should remain with Omolara and directed Idowu to be paying N20,000 monthly as upkeep allowance for the children. NAN
