Court arraigns 68-year-old motorist for non-possession of driver’s licence, reckless driving


A 68-year-old motorist, Muritala Nosiru, Friday, appeared before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged reckless driving without driver’s license and causing accident to another vehicle.

Nosiru was said to have allegedly hit and caused serious damage to one Hyundai Accent car with Reg. No: AAA 257 BM, property of Sosaco Nigeria Limited.

According to Vanguard, Nosiru who is also a trader at Block 25, Flat 1, Medium Estate, Alapere, Lagos, was arraigned on a three-count charge.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Lucky Ihiehie, told the court that the accused committed the offences on 15 September on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, adding that the complainant, Bello Barka, driver of the company car, reported the matter to the police.

Ihiehie said the complainant was driving on Lagos-Ibadan expressway by old toll gate when a Mazda bus in front of him stopped to allow a wheel barrow pusher cross the road.

The complainant, according to him, then slowed down and before he knew it, he heard a loud bang at the back of his car.

The prosecutor further noted that the impact from the vehicle a Benz Jeep pushed the complainant’s car to hit the Mazda bus in front of him.

He said the offence contravened Sections 19 (1), item 1, Schedule 3 and Section 29(1) of the Road Traffic Law, 2012, which attracts a fine of N100, 000 or two years imprisonment or both.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Mrs. Sule Amzat, the Court Magistrate, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50, 000 with a surety in like sum, ordering that the surety would produce evidence of residence, must not be self-employed and the surety’s residence and work address must be verified by the court.

Amzat also ordered that the surety must be over 40 years old and a must have a recent passport.

She adjourned the matter till 23rd September. .
