Court arraigns 65-year-old man for ‘419’ in Lagos


One Nicholas Kolawole was on Tuesday arraigned at an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos state for alleged fraud.

The accused, 65, a resident of Olodi Apapa area of the state, had allegedly obtained vehicles worth N19 million from one Isiaka Abiodun under false pretense.

According to the Prosecutor, Insp. Tony Elibeh, the accused committed the offences on March 19 at No.133 Uzor Street, Olodi Apapa, Lagos.

Elibeh said that the accused fraudulently obtained vehicles worth N19 million from Abiodun, on the pretext of buying a land for him and developing it as payment, adding that Kolawole, instead of buying the land and developing it as promised, converted the money to his personal use.

The prosecutor said, “When the complainant did not get any feedback from the accused, he decided to call him but Kolawole refused to pick his calls.

“Abiodun said that, after some days, he was able to get hold of the accused and when he requested for his money, Kolewole started deceiving him and he reported the case to the police which led to Kolawole’s arrest.

Elibeh said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011 as section 312 prescribes 15-year jail term for obtaining under false pretences.

Kolawole, who is facing a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining under false pretense pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Titus Abolarinwa, granted the accused N200, 000 bail, with two sureties in like sum.

Abolarinwa adjourned the case till May 11.
