Residents of Ode Irele in Irele Local Government area of Ondo State were in mournful mood over the weekend following the death of a couple reportedly hit by a Toyota Camry car.
Eye witness said the deceased, Chief Samuel Ododo and his wife, Olufumilayo were knocked down in front of their house, at Gbaleju area of the ancient town, Saturday evening.
Apart from the couple, it was learnt the vehicle also hit three of their grand children and another old woman, who all sustained various degrees of injuries.
The driver of the ill-fated car, identified as Abisoye Wobo, who was alleged to be drunk, was coming from a burial ceremony in the town, after which he lost control of the car and rammed into the victims, where they were relaxing in front of their house.
Ododo, a Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the local government was reported to have attended the last House of Assembly primary election held in the state on the fateful day.
Apparently irked by the development, sources said the youths in the town trooped out in large number, went to the house of the alleged killer, and set the house ablaze.
However, the young driver was said to have fled the town to evade being lynched.
Men of State Police Command and other security agents were said to have quickly moved intervene to prevent further breakdown of law and other in the community.
However, the Police Spokesman, Wole Ogodo could not be reached for comment as at press time, but a source said the command was on top of the situation while investigation on the matter was ongoing.
It was gathered that the remains of the deceased had been deposited at the mortuary while the injured were receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
The whereabouts of the alleged killer driver is still unknown.
