Count us out of Labour Party national convention in Ondo – NLC, TUC

The leadership of the organised labour in the country has dissociated itself from the planned national convention of the Labour Party (LP) scheduled to take place in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

Two leading unions, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have also expressed their resolve to reposition the LP as the platform for the teeming working population of the country.

A joint communiqué issued by the presidents of TUC and the NLC, Comrades Bobboi Bala Kaigama and Abdulwaheed I. Omar yesterday, stated that their members would not be part of the convention in Akure, saying by Mimiko’s defection, he ceased to be a member of their party.

On the defection of the governor, the two unions wrote, “The die has now been cast, and Governor Mimiko who was elected governor of Ondo State for the second time running, has defected to the PDP. This has obviously brought remarkable changes and challenges to the Labour Party.”

They said the governor was no longer a member of the LP and that the decision of the party to hold the convention in Akure had been overtaken by events.

Continuing, “As major stakeholders, the two labour centres are committed to the development and sustainability of a true working people’s party. To this end, the NLC and TUC, are convinced on the imperative of holding broad based consultations to decide on the modalities for having a successful convention.

“To this end, we have mandated the National Labour Political Commission to organize a broad all-inclusive stakeholder’s meeting on Thursday October 9, 2014 to discuss the way forward for the Party.

“We, therefore, call on all members of the Labour Party, to refrain from participating in the convention called for October 11, 2014, in Akure, Ondo State”.
