Convention fallout: There cannot be two PDPs in Nigeria – Ameh Ebute

Former President of the Senate in the truncated Third Republic, Senator Ameh Ebute has stated that the real reason former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, seven PDP governors, and others formed a parallel PDP at the weekend was in connection with the 2015 presidency.

Ebute, who is the chairman, Congress for Equality and Change, CEC, called on the group to be honest, adding that the reasons they gave for working out of the convention were immaterial, noting that there cannot be two PDP in the country.

It would be recalled that former Vice president, Atiku Abubakar and governors of Adamawa, Kano, Sokoto, Jigawa, Niger, Kwara and Rivers states, who are Murtala Nyako, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Aliyu Wamakko, Sule Lamido, Babangida Aliyu, Abdulfatah Ahmed and Rotimi Amaechi respectively and other party chieftains staged a walkout during the PDP national convention held at the Eagles Square, in Abuja to form their own faction of the party.

While reacting, Ebute said the reasons they gave for breaking out and thus forming ‘the so-called new ‘PDP’ were mere smokescreen.

The Idoma elder statesman man said, “Their ambition is the presidency and since they know that President Goodluck Jonathan is entitled to a second term in office, they don’t want to wait until 2019, that is the honest thing, that is the problem.

“So, they should call a spade- spade, as there is nothing like a new ‘PDP’. I am sure the leadership of the PDP and the leadership of this country will bring the aggrieved party members together and they will trace their way back.

“I describe them as aggrieved party members for reasons that are obvious, and their reasons are to become president and vice president of this country. That is all,” Ebute stated.

“They are not the main reasons for their action. They call themselves a new PDP. PDP does not have two certificates of registration. The main certificate of registration is with the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur and the secretariat.

“So, when they talk about the new PDP, it beats my imagination. There cannot be two PDP in Nigeria. If eventually the peace move that will be put up by the leadership of the PDP fails, I foresee that they may move to the new Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM).

“But they cannot have two PDP in the country. There is nothing like a new PDP. They don’t have a certificate of registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and they cannot sponsor any candidate on the platform of their so-called PDP.

“That shows that they have not completely left PDP. And that is why I told you that when the leadership of the real PDP makes effort to bring them back, they will definitely come back,” Ebute affirmed.
