The Governor of Kano State, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, has said the local construction company handling the collapsed pedestrian bridge along Sheik Jafar road will be made to pay adequate compensation to the families those who lost their lives on Sunday.

The state police command, while confirming the death of seven persons when the bridge gave way, said “criminal investigation has commenced against the contractor and he would face charges if found wanting.”

The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Magaji Majiya, disclosed this in a parley with journalists in Kano.

The Governor’s stance on the incident was made known in a statement signed by Halilu Dantiye, the Director of Press in the Government House.

Dantiye affirmed, “Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso has vowed to ensure that the victims and their families are adequately compensated by the company,” while adding that “doing so will avoid a lot of unnecessary consequences.”

The statement called on residents of the State to continue to be law abiding.

The release also admonished other construction companies in the state to ensure they carry on with their work in a way that would not pose a risk to commuters.

Governor Kwankwaso who condoled with the bereaved families also prayed for the quick recovery of those injured.

“The workers at the site had warned motorists not to pass because they were working on the bridge but the driver of the taxi allegedly ignored the warning.

‘’So, the moment he moved; before he passed, the bridge caved in and collapsed on the vehicle, which led to the death of seven persons,” he said.
