Confusion in Anambra Over APGA Senatorial primaries, as Umeh emerges candidate

There was confusion in Anambra on Wednesday following what some people described as shabby conduct of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA’s senatorial primary election.

In Anambra south particularly, party members who spoke to DAILY POST said the event was poorly organised as the primary election billed to hold at Ekwulobia township stadium could not commence at 4pm following the invasion of the venue by thugs.

The election was between widow of late Chief Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and a businessman, Chief Nicholas Ukachukwu.

A third contender, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah had been disqualified by the party during the screening process for not obtaining a waiver after joining the party less than 10 months ago.

The Ekwulobia township stadium venue of the exercise had been invaded by thugs who chased away delegates, causing the party to deferr the election.

A leader of the party who spoke under the cover of anonymity told our correspondent that, “all these confusion is the handwork of our governor. This is not primaries, they are just giving tickets out to the preferred aspirants. The governor (Obiano) is killing this party.”

As of the time of filling this report, it was learnt that the party had called for security, and had started a fresh process for the primary election in Anambra South senatorial zone.

Meanwhile, Senator Victor Umeh has been announced winner of the party’s primary election for Anambra central senatorial zone.

Umeh, who stood as a sole candidate, was announced winner, after he polled 207 votes from the total vote of 209.

“This is a confirmation of our victory in the main election. We had a successful primary election, and out of the 209 delegates, I lost only two votes to some illiterates who could not identify yes from no,” Umeh told journalists after he was declared winner.
