Confusion as INEC recognizes Abdulsalam as Labour Party chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam as the authentic National chairman of the Labour Party.

INEC was reacting to a recent announcement by the National Working Committee (NWC) led by a former Rotary Club boss, Mike Omotosho that Abdulsalam had been removed from office.

Abdulsalam was alleged to have embezzled over N1.3billion belonging to the party.

However, Abdulsalam had insisted he remains the national chairman of the party, insisting that the rebellious group had no powers to convene an NWC meeting.

But confirming Abdulsalam as the authentic National Chairman of the party, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Lawrence Oyekanmi on Monday said the commission had not changed from recognizing Abdulsalam as the LP Chairman.

He said, “Just go the website of the commission, and you will see that there has been no effected change on the party’s chairman, if the chairman of the Labour Party has changed, the commission would have done that by effecting such change on its website. So whoever you see his name on the INEC website is the chairman of the Labour party”, Oyekanmi said.

“I am not aware of any such recognition by INEC. We had a successful convention on October 3rd and INEC witnessed it. The only report is an interim report by the police indicting Salam (Abdulsalam) on the criminal allegations against him,” she said.

A check on the INEC website confirmed Abdulsalam as National Chairman, Julius Aburi as acting National Secretary, Mrs Oluchi Operah National Treasurer, Hajiya Hadiza Kishimi National Financial Secretary and Barrister Akingbade Oyelekan National Legal Adviser.
