Uruguay missed three times from the spot, as Italy put behind their penalty shoot-out pain against Spain on Thursday, to win the third-place match.

Davide Astori tapped in Diamanti’s free-kick, that cannoned off the crossbar, to give the Azzurri the lead in the first half. Edinson Cavani, had an effort ruled out for offside, but equalised early in the second half with a well-placed free-kick.

Diamanti put Italy 2-1 up with a fantastic free-kick and five minutes later, Cavani matched his effort with another sensational free-kick, to level up scores.

Although Riccardo Montolivo was sent off in extra time, Uruguay failed to win the tie as only Cavani and Suarez, were the two players that scored from the spot, with Buffon saving the others.
