The Nigeria Prisons Service (NPS) has urged the citizenry to imbibe the habit of prison visitation, to enhance the rehabilitation of inmates.
Alhaji Yakubu Musa, the Assistant Comptroller-General of Prison in charge of Zone B, made the call in Hadejia on Thursday when he paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Hadejia, Alhaji Adamu Abubakar.
Musa said that such visit would go a long way in reducing stigma and give the inmates a sense of belonging in the society.
“It is good for members of the public to be visiting prisons, so as to give a sense of belonging to the inmates.
“By so doing, they will feel that the people care for them and it will stimulate their integration into the society,’’ he said.
Musa also urged NGOs, corporate bodies and wealthy individuals to support the skill acquisition training of inmates in the country.
He noted that training was essential towards the effective rehabilitation of inmates as well as in encouraging them to contribute effectively towards social and economic development of the society.
The assistant comptroller commended the emirate council for its support to the command.
Responding, the emir, urged the command to expedite action on the transfer of ownership of the old prison yard in Hadejia to the emirate council, to pave way for the proposed Islamic school project at the site.
