Company driver charged with theft of N15m SUV


A 42-year-old man, ‎Gabriel Akin-Maweku, was Wednesday charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged theft of SUV worth N15 million. Akin- Maweku, a former driver of Seplat Petroleum Development Company Ltd., is facing a three-count charge of burglary, stealing and impersonation.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Cyriacus ‎Osuji, told the court that the accused, who resides at No. 10/23, Jakande Road in Ojo-Ajangbadi area of Lagos, committed the offences on Sept. 30.

He said the accused impersonated one Yusuf Audu, an officer, to gain entry into a branch of his former office‎ at No. 14, Temple Road, Ikoyi, Lagos.

“After he had gained entry into the company, he stole a black Toyota Prado jeep with registration no. BDC 362 AJ, property of the company.

“The accused’s employment had been terminated in July before the accused committed the offence,’’ he said.

The offences contravened Sections 285 (1), 306 (1) and 378 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences.

The Magistrate, Mrs A. T. Omoyele, granted the accused bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said the sureties should be gainfully employed and their addresses verified.

The case was adjourned to Nov. 2 for mention.
