Commercial tricyclist bags three years jail term for robbing 81-year-old woman


A commercial tricycles operator, Emmanuel Osita was on Monday sentenced by Justice Lawal Akapo of the Lagos State High Court, sitting in Ikeja, to three years imprisonment on a two count charge bordering on obtaining money by false presence.

Osita was apprehended by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, following a petition from a legal practitioner on behalf of 81- year-old Mrs. Veronica Okonkwo who he allegedly robbed.

The commercial tricyclist conspired with some persons now at large to deceive the the 81-year-old that they have what it takes to produce local and foreign currencies from pieces of papers by dipping them into a mercury.

Osita, alongside his gang, deceived the octogenarian into parting with the sum of N120, 000 as registration fee with a mercury company that will purchase the chemical.

Veronica was also made to sell her property in Festac Town Lagos for N27 million and the proceeds was shared by Osita and his gang members.

Osita was first arraigned on 1st July, 2014. He subsequently pleaded guilty after promising to refund the money and the property valued at N27 million back to the octogenarian.

In a resumed hearing on Monday, Justice Lawal Akapo sentenced Osita to three years imprisonment without an option of fine following his guilty plea and the restitution he made to the victim.
