Cobbler remanded for stabbing man to death in Lagos

21-year-old cobbler identified as Olalekan Aweda was on Tuesday remanded by an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Lagos for allegedly hacking a man to death using a dagger.

Aweda is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Richard Odigie, the accused committed the offences on May 8 at about 10.00 p.m. at Joseph Street on Lagos Island.

Odigie noted that the deceased 36-year-old Ganiu Bello and the accused had a misunderstanding with Aweda promising to deal with him.

He said, “On that day, Aweda ambushed Bello and upon sighting him, stabbed him with a dagger on his neck killing him instantly.”

The prosecutor stressed that the offences contravened Sections 221 and 231 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.I. Adelaja, ordered the suspect to be remanded at Ikoyi Prisons for 30 days pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP.

However, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs O.I. Adelaja adjourned the case to July 8 for further mention.
