The Osun State chapter of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties, CNPP, yesterday raised the alarm over what it called “criminal and unprovoked attacks” on some candidates participating in next month’s polls in the state.
According to CNPP, the current violent attacks going on in the state portend danger for the lives and properties of the people of Osun.
It also lamented what it termed as the less than impressive way security operatives in the state were dealing with many reported incident of attacks.
While addressing the media at the NUJ Press Centre, Osogbo, the state chairman of CNPP, Pastor Popoola Olatunji, condemned the attack on the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for Ifelodun/Boripe/Odo Otin Federal Constituency, Barrister Kayode Oduoye.
Olatunji, who doubles as the Osun State chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, said it was imperative for the security agencies in the state to nip such acts in the bud as quickly as they occur to douse the rising tension and prevent breakdown of law and order.
He further stressed that “based on the peaceful disposition of Oduoye, even when under attack, all parties under the aegis of CNPP had adopted him as their candidate for the House Representatives election for Ifelodun/Boripe/Odo Otin federal constituency.”
The CNPP chairman then called on members of the eight political parties in the group to remain peaceful and work for the success of Oduoye, just as he assured the PDP candidate of total support.
Reacting, Oduoye said the adoption meant more responsibility for him and pledged his readiness to lead with the fear of God by providing leadership with vision.
He listed youth and women empowerment, agriculture, education and infrastructural development as some of the areas he would focus, if elected.
DAILY POST recalls that Oduoye’s campaign train was recently attacked in Ikirun by suspected political thugs, who dealt machete cuts on his supporters and vandalized his campaign vehicles.
