Cleric urges FG to curb excesses of Customs officials

Blind cleric and General Overseer, Hour of Mercy Prayer Ministries (aka Ori Oke Alaseyori), Prophet Muyideen Kasali, has urged the Federal Government to call men and officials of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to order with a view to curbing their excesses.

Kasali, who lamented the over zealousness, lawlessness and act of indiscipline of the officials at their duty posts, said they needed to be tamed.

The cleric spoke against the backdrop of the alleged treatment meted to him by a nine-man Customs squad, led by an assistant superintendent at Ikire, Osun State, where a Customs personnel fired shots even after he had stopped at their point.

He said: “This is how they kill many innocent law abiding Nigerians.

“This act of impunity, lawlessness and indiscipline must stop. The Customs High Command must tell them to desist from such acts. Why must they shoot when we had already stopped on their orders. Must they waste lives and Nigerians’ resources unnecessarily?”

“What are they even looking for on the roads? Vehicles and rice are smuggled into the country under their nose! This shows their inefficiency and they should be ashamed of this rather than totting guns at innocent Nigerians and breaking into people’s shops and warehouses at night,” he said.

Kasali, who bemoaned the activities of some Customs personnel operating under the cover of darkness, said: “What is the difference between them and the criminals they claim to be looking for?

“Men and officials of the Customs should wake up to their responsibilities. Already, they have abandoned their duties and chasing money about. That is why smugglers have field’s day at the borders smuggling whatever they like into the country.

“The Federal Government should as a matter of urgency pay attention to the matter of the Customs with a view to repositioning the Service and by so doing plucking the avenues of waste at the borders which they have made porous,” Kasali said.
