Civil society group decries role of INEC, security agencies in Rivers elections

A human rights group, the Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, has called on relevant institutions to thoroughly investigate the acts of violence that marred the elections in Rivers State.

Executive Director of group, Anyakwee Nsirimovu, said evidences are being documented to prosecute those behind the killings in Rivers state.

Nsirimovu also wondered why the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, went ahead to conduct the governorship elections in Rivers State despite calls to re-schedule Last saturdays election

The rights activist also noted that the results declared by INEC in Rivers State were false, adding that the elections were too bloody to be accepted.

While calling for the probe of the security operatives that were posted to Rivers State, Nsirimovu emphasized that AIG Tunde Ogunsakin was removed in order to give room for wide spread rigging and intimidation of voters.

“If you noticed in the elections, some states moved forward but in Rivers state; at the Presidential election we moved backward and then the Governorship election was worst. The process was marred.

“We also blame INEC for not taking a decision on Rivers State. For us, the civil society group, the observers and the media, who monitored the election in Rivers state, we all know what happened.

“This is blood letting and not election,” Nsirimovu said.
