The Police Commissioner for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Wilson Inalegwu has reassured residents of FCT of adequate security during the coming Christmas celebration.
Inalegwu gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.
He said that the command would continue to come up with strategies to tackle issues of security in the nation’s capital.
“All I want to say is that the command is very mindful of its responsibility to FCT residents and visitors alike and has continued to evolve strategies to deal with the issue of security,“he said.
The commissioner stated that the command had already drawn an operational order for the ’ember’ months, and it had been implementing it.
“We drew up an operational order for ember months which started in September, this we have been implementing”.
He explained that the content of the order include meeting with religious leaders, traditional rulers, and many others.
“We have also continued to sustain and even increase on our motorised patrols of every nook and cranny of the FCT.
“We also have in place a joint security arrangement with the military, DSS and NSCDC to keep watch on suspected crime hotspots,“he said.
He said this was in addition to the raids the command had undertaken through her police divisions across the FCT.
Inalegwu said that the combination of these efforts had impacted positively on the low level of crime that was currently being experienced in the territory.
He urged residents to always give the police information through the command’s helplines.
“We have got to ensure that we do everything we can within our level best to ensure that we have a seamless Christmas celebration.
“We urge our people to remain calm but to be vigilant, to become active partners, to observe their neighborhoods,“he said.
He urged religious leaders to have their own private security within the churches and mosques that would network with the police, in line with the command’s community policing approach.
“The private security you have in your organisation and the police deployed around your neighborhood, working very closely together, can deliver effective security”, he said.
