The Commissioner of Police, CP, Edo State Police Command, Mr. Chris Ezike, disclosed on Friday that the command had launched an ‘all-out offensive’ against cultism and other criminal activities, as part of efforts to ensure a hitch-free Christmas celebration in the state.
The special operation, according to the Commissioner, began on Thursday and would last throughout the weekend in strategic areas of the state.
While addressing the press in Benin, the state capital, Ezike noted that while the command had begun the screening of some persons, some arms had been recovered.
Recalling some of the incidences over time, the CP said in December 2014, no fewer than 12 persons were killed during several clashes by rival cult groups in Benin.
“In a recent development, however, one person was also confirmed dead in a recent cult related clash at Usen quarters in Ogida, while one was reportedly killed on Lagos Street on Wednesday during a violence outbreak between two groups over the collection of revenue in the area,” he added.
“The one that happened in the Oba market area has to do with the revenue people. One revenue group stabbed another revenue group and one person died. But I am aware that Eye and Aiye clashed in Ogida jurisdiction, resulting in one death.
“There is an all-out offensive with effect from yesterday. And I am very satisfied with the results that are coming. Before I can tell you the arrests that have been made, the screening would have been over. It started last night; it is going to last throughout the weekend and screening is simultaneously going on. Arms are also being recovered.”
The commissioner, while advising residents of the state not to entertain fear as they celebrate in the festive period, urged them to continue to partner with the security agency by providing useful information to assist in curbing crime in the state.
“We have risen to the occasion in all ramifications and the people will have a good Christmas. They should also partner with us because it is a collective responsibility.
“Whatever they see, whatever they notice, let them tip us off.
“There is no need for any apprehension. The Christmas is by the corner; people should be excited about Christmas and the New Year and go about their lawful businesses, security is sure,” the CP assured.
