Christians protest on Ilorin streets over ownership of schools

The sleepy town of Ilorin, the Kwara State capital was jolted this morning as thousands of Christians from different denominations stormed the streets in protest over the taking over of their schools by the Kwara State government.

The protesters were demanding for the return of the schools even as all schools in the state resumed same day after additional weeks at home due to fear of the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak.

The Senior Special Assistant to the governor on Media and Communications, Dr. Muideen Akorede however denied that the Kwara State government had any such plan to take over Christian schools in the state.

Dailypost investigation confirmed that the state government had been giving grants to the schools since the year 2006, a situation that technically confer ownership on the government. This, the Christian protesters are protesting against.

Dailypost reporter in Ilorin also confirmed that as early as 7am, protesters gathered at St James Schools, Primary, Junior and Senior Secondary schools owned by Christ Apostolic Church CAC on the ever busy Yidi road, singing.

They filled across streets in the city peacefully with placards that read: “We want our Schools back’’, ’’We are taking back our schools because they belong to us’’, Government should stop grant aiding our schools, we can run them on our own’’, ’’Enough of oppression and injustice, we are taking back our schools, they belong to us’’, ’’Mission Schools belong to us, and we want government to stop grant aiding it’’
