Christian Elders raise alarm over plot to truncate Nigeria’s democracy

The National Christian Elders’ Forum, NCEF, has raised the alarm alerting Nigerians to the plot by some politicians to truncate the nation’s democracy through military intervention in a bid to remain in power at all costs.

It alleged that those hatching the plot were doing so with the sole aim of promoting Sharia, having realised their failure in all parameters of governance.

Addressing journalists on the State of the Nation Friday night, NCEF Chairman, Solomon Asemota (SAN), said any attempt to forestall a change in the nation’s leadership through a democratic process will be resisted.

He noted that several attempts had been made by the Executive to turn the National Assembly into a meaningless symbol of democratic practice.

Asemota observed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had become a partial crime fighter used in fighting stealth Jihad.

He also said the NCEF was disturbed by the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to swell the ranks of Muslims in the roll call of recipients of National Honours by refusing to grant the 2018 honours to any Christian.

His words: “Nigerians are hereby alerted that with the realisation that the current Islamists in power have failed woefully, on all parameters of governance, and it would be difficult for them to scale through a free and fair Democratic process, the NCEF is warning ahead of time that a military coup will not be accepted in Nigeria.

“There should be no attempt by anyone to seek to hold power by staging a coup to replace any government thereby forestalling a change in leadership through proper.”

The NCEF further urged Nigerians of goodwill to defend themselves against all forms of Jihad, saying “it is time Nigerians say enough is enough to the Islamist exclusion of non-Islamists in governance especially security and intelligence arms of the country.”
